Once Human Is Being Review Bombed Hours After Launched [Updated]

by Cole Phelps

Update: The developers fixed the issue with switching worlds/servers. Players can now move from one server to the other freely, with no need to delete their characters. With this change, the game’s review score was boosted to “Mixed” from “Mostly Negative”.

TLDR (Origianl Story):

  • Players are furious over the lack of an option to switch servers or delete their character in Once Human.
  • The game only allows one character per account.
  • Once Human now has a Most Negative review badge on Steam.
  • Some players have reported low frame rates even on high-end PCs.

It didn’t start well for Once Human! Only a few hours after its global launch on Steam, Once Human now has a “Mostly Negative” review badge with only 30% of positive reviews.

While you can have multiple complaints about the game’s current state, there is one thing that most negative reviews have in common: criticizing the inability to delete your character or even change your server.

As the developers acknowledged earlier today in an FAQ post, Once Human will only allow players to create a single character per account until the technical limitations are resolved. While that sounds frustrating, players could still live with that if the game would allow them to at least switch from one server to another.

The server that you pick for the first time in Once Human is the one that you will be stuck with for the foreseeable future until the developers allow creating multiple characters or provide an option to delete your existing characters.

Multiple Steam players have pointed out in the reviews that they simply cannot team up with their friends because they chose the wrong servers in the beginning, and now there is no way to switch servers or delete the character and create a new one.

Well, since the game is free-to-play, you can still compensate for that by switching to another Steam account, but that is not really a wise decision, as the game should allow players to at least delete their character.

Starry Studio, the developer behind Once Human, is yet to react to this poor launch on Steam. The developers will surely need to hurry up with their plans to expand character creation or at least provide a temporary way to get rid of the created characters and reset everything before they get even more negative reviews.

The problem isn’t only about the character limitations though. Multiple players have reported that Once Human runs poorly with a significantly low frame rate even on systems with specifications far beyond the recommended specs. “This game runs really bad,” reads a review on Steam. “Just feels like 15-20 frames per second. Even tried swapping to 1080 and nothing. I have a 4090.”

From the look of things, it seems like Once Human has been released ahead of its real completion, but the game does not carry an Early Access badge, which is the main reason why players are not happy with the developer’s approach.

That being said, Once Human has over 80,000 concurrent players on Steam at the time of writing this article, which is huge for the launch day.
