The First Descendant: How To Unlock Characters

by Cole Phelps

If you want to enjoy your playtime in The First Descendant and explore all the available builds, you will need to unlock characters or Descendants, as the game likes to call them.

Each character in The First Descendant comes with a distinct look and a unique set of skills and abilities. You start the game with access to a limited number of Descendants, but to unlock the rest, you should start farming for required materials in different regions of the game.

How To Unlock Characters

In order to unlock a character, you should first pay a visit to Anais in Albion, the hub area of The First Descendant. Click on the Research Request, and then you can check out the required materials for every character.

Click on every Descendant that you want to unlock, then hover your mouse over the required material and press F. A new window will pop up, telling you which mission at which region will grant you the material.

Keep in mind that some materials cannot be obtained directly, and they are crafted via multiple other materials. This is a thing for higher-tier Descendants. If a material cannot be accessed by completing missions, the information page will still tell you how you can get it. For example, Hellion is not a quest reward, but you can obtain it through Munition or Resource Boxes scattered around the Fortress region.

The materials for each Descendant are mostly scattered in a unique area, which is the reason why progressing through the main questline and unlocking new regions is the key to unlocking new characters in The First Descendant.

The Ultimate versions of Descendants can also be unlocked via the same path, but it requires heavy grind as most of them will have to win Intercept Battles at a higher difficulty level.

Once you have all the required materials for a Descendant as well as the Gold needed to run the research, you can request research and the character will be playable after the research is completed in a set time.

How To Purchase Characters

In case you can’t wait to gain access to all Descendants throughout the quests, there is the option to purchase them using real-life money.

If you head to the inventory menu, there is a Shop tab on top of the screen. Here, you can check out the available Descendants for purchase. The price tag for Descendants varies from 300 Caliber to 900 Caliber. The Ultimate Descendants can also be purchased the same way for 3,000 and 5,000 Caliber.

You can get Caliber by completing Battle Pass or directly buying it from the in-game shop. For now, 250 Caliber equals to $5.
